My motivation in 1983 was bison restoration to the family landscape in the Texas Panhandle. I bought two calves from the Sharping Sale in Chamberlain, SD. They yielded three heifer calves over the next five years and I realized the dedication it would take to develop a herd, especially over the next few years with fencing and replacing the bull that got shot. After they expanded to about 20 head (with minimal replacements for genetic diversity), the herd instinct began to predominate and I had become an experienced fence-builder. I had several blood-typed and DNA tested in the 1990s. At one time they were also certified as Texas brucellosis free. They have always been free-ranging on native short grasses. The herd has grown to 150 head at present, including 2019 calves. Since I do not wean or actively separate the herd, their cohesion is a factor of their own doing. Nor have they been in a corral since 2014, even then not all of them. This year there were two different bull groups, one of about 10 animals and another of 10-12. Any animal sold choice or individually will bring a premium, or be priced separately. I still have all the calves from the past three years, approximately 20+ head each year, bulls and heifers. In 2014 I had 120 head, but it was at the end of a three year drought. I ran out of pasture and had to sell nearly half the herd across the board along with another 15-20 head of older bulls. This has given me a perspective on the natural increase and herd carrying capacity of available pasture. In 2019 I had approximately 1,200 acres in three separate tracts. CRP land will be available this year or the next. I'll need to sell some in 2020. I prefer not to sell directly to the slaughter market, but rather in discreet family units, perhaps 15-20 head at a minimum for a beginner herd or assimilated as a group into a larger settled herd, but all options are open. (There is no guarantee that my corrals can separate on that basis, but I may be able to pen such a group when they have separated on their own.) These animals are unique in their background and would be a very positive addition on that basis. They deserve a good price, one representative of the years they have developed as family, but it should be reasonable and negotiable to the right buyer. Photos can be sent by email attachment to serious inquiries.

Our ranch is in Central Texas, 15 minutes west of Lampasas. We love our Bison! We sell High Quality Calves yearly. We observe Humane Handling Ethics. We don't use hormones or antibiotics, ever. We regularly vaccinate for parasites and viruses. We are a small ranch, which means more individual attention per bison. Our herd is well-adjusted, with calm dispositions. They've never broken a fence –> because they’re happy! Our Bison don’t go hungry. We feed them ~90% grass or horse quality hay (+ alfalfa when calves > 5 mos.) and ~10% Protein (20%) cubes. Our bison are deeply muscled due to hilly terrain.
