Experience of a Lifetime. Ranch Hand for the Summer – Remote. Wilderness Alaska
Looking for 2 more ranch hands to work on our start-up bison Ranch in the remote wilderness of Alaska for the summer. I will pay for travel and living expenses to and from Alaska to your home state including the private charter float plane flight out to my off-the-grid ranch from Anchorage, Alaska. I will need a commitment from June 8-August 25th 2023. Though we are off the grid, there are modern conveniences. The main cabin has a full kitchen, running water, full bathroom and shower, power and wifi. Verizon cell phone service works most of the time. The bunkhouse is comfortable and cozy for our hands. In addition to covering the once in a lifetime experience to remote Alaska we are paying between $15 and $20/hr depending on experience. Ranch Hands must work Monday-Friday. Weekends are yours to hunt, fish, hike, or whatever…unless you want extra $ then there is always work to do. The type of work we will be doing is clearing brush, running barbed wire fences, building a hay barn, cutting trees etc.. We need the ranch ready to receive the first bison next March as they will be freighted out by snow sleds. See below for more details. While there is power, running water and flushing toilets available on-site, this is the closest you will come in your life to anything like the pioneers lived 100 years ago.
The adventure part is real. It is possible you will encounter bears, moose, wolves, wolverines, lynx, or other wildlife while outdoors. THIS IS NOT A ZOO. It is true, raw wilderness. You need to treat it with respect at all times.
EMERGENCY HEALTHCARE IS AT LEAST AN HOUR FLIGHT AWAY MOST DAYS AND MAY NOT BE AVAILABLE DUE TO WEATHER CONDIDTIONS FOR DAYS AT ATIME. SAFETY IS AN ABSOLUTE PRIORITY FOR US ON THE RANCH!
Work will be supervised but you are expected to take care of yourself, be safe and take care of those around you. Farm/Ranch experience preferred but not required. Running power equipment may be part of the daily work. Equipment may include brushers, mowers, chainsaws, ATV’s, tractor’s, sawmill etc.. Using the equipment is part of the learning about being on a ranch.
Being athletic is not a pre-requisite, but you better be in pretty good shape. Walking up and down hills and valleys, through thick wilderness is physical work on its own. Add in cutting and moving brush and trees and pulling fence line and its a down-right workout.
NOTE: The bison will be brought to the ranch in March 2024. The work we are doing this summer will be to prep for the animals to arrive. You may be invited back to help us herd them out.
You may bring a hunting rifle only if you have an updated hunting safety course certificate in your state or Alaska. We do keep firearms around and loaded at all times for wildlife safety and at times subsistence hunting. If you plan to fish or hunt, you will need to ensure the animals are in season and that you have all have all the proper licenses, tags, permits, registrations to ensure you are hunting/fishing in accordance with all state and federal laws. Alaska is no joke when it comes to hunting penalties and it is 100% on you. Fishing license is easy. Hunting can be complicated. All weapons must be transported in accordance with all State/Federal/Airline laws. Weapons will be checked in upon arrival and checked out to ranchers at the Big A Bison Ranch owner’s sole discretion while on property.
SLOTS ARE LIMITED. NO MORE THAN 4 TRANSIENT RANCHERS ON THE RANCH AT ONE TIME. If families would like to join on their own dime, we can have a discussion. Bunk housing is limited.
There are no snakes in Alaska to fear, but the mosquitos may carry you away on some days. We will have bug spray but you may want to bring more.
ALCOHOL- IF YOU ARE UNDER 21 YRS OF AGE YOU MAY NOT BRING OR CONSUME ALCOHOL ON THE RANCH. NO-ONE MAY CONSUME ALCOHOL DURING WORKING HOURS OR WITHIN 8 HOURS PRIOR TO WORKING HOURS.
DRUGS – YES WEED IS LEGAL IN ALASKA, BUT NOT ON MY RANCH. ABSOLUTELY NO DRUG USE ON THE RANCH. NO EXCEPTIONS. IF YOU ARE CAUGHT USING, PROVIDING, TRANSPORTING, SELLING, OR DISTRIBUTING DRUGS ON THE RANCH YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR AIRLINE TICKET REIMBURSEMENT PLUS THE COST OF $1500.00 FOR A RETURN TRIP TO ANCHORAGE OFF MY RANCH AT THE EARLIIEST POSSIBLE TIME BASED ON WEATHER AND CHARTER AVAILABILITY. ALSO, YOU WILL FOREFEIT ANY AND ALL FIREARMS YOU BROUGHT TO THE RANCH. I WILL NOT RETURN A FIREARM FOR TRANSPORT OR ANY OTHER REASON TO AN INDIVIDUAL UNDER THE KNOWN OR SUSPECTED INFLUENCE OF DRUGS OR ALCOHOL. THIS IS A NO-NEGOTIATION, NO DISCUSSION POLICY. IF YOU NEED WEED OR OTHER DRUGS…NO HATING FROM ME…BUT DON’T COME TO MY RANCH WITH IT. DUE TO THIS POLICY, YOU WILL NEED EITHER A CREDIT CARD AND AUTHORIZATION FORM ACKNOWLEDGING THIS POLICY AND ENFORCEMENT OF THE PENALTIES DESCRIBED ON FILE PRIOR TO ARRIVAL OR TO AGREE TO UNLIMITED SEARCHES OF YOURSELF AND YOUR PERSONAL PROPERTY PRIOR TO THE FLIGHT TO THE RANCH AND AT ANY TIME WHILE AT THE RANCH. NO EXCEPTIONS.
