2018 DTBA Black Hills Buffalo Classic – Home of the North American Producer’s Challenge

Enter your best bull and heifer calves in a performance tested competition against some of the best producers in the United States and Canada. With $7500 in cash and prizes up for grabs, we challenge you to bring us your best and put them to the test! To be eligible for the North American Producer’s Challenge cash award, consignors must enter both classes in the same year.

Bull calves are delivered to the host ranch and will go through a grass test and then on to a feed test. Scoring will be based on incoming weight, grass gain, feed gain, overall gain and live judging. The top third scoring bulls will be offered for sale at the Black Hills Buffalo Classic Auction in February 2019. Entry fee is $1200 per animal.

Heifer calves are delivered to the host ranch and will be on a basic grass test for most of the competition period. The heifers will finish out on a short pasture/self-feeder test to put a little bloom on them for the auction! Scoring will be based on incoming weight, grass gain, feed test gain and live judging. The top scoring heifers will be offered for sale at the Black Hills Buffalo Classic Auction in February 2019. Entry fee is $875 per animal.

Bison Ranch Hand

The Double T Ranch near Babb, MT is a bison exclusive ranch maintaining approximately 850 mother cows grazing on 9,000 plus acres. In addition to the cow herd, the Double T Ranch operates bison backgrounding/feed and grow facilities with capacities of up to 2,500 animals. The Double T Ranch is seeking to fill the position of Bison Ranch Hand (BRH) who reports directly to the Ranch Operations Manager (ROM). The BRH is required to work on the property year-round.

Primary Responsibilities and Scope:

  • Provide general animal husbandry activities including daily feeding and watering, facility maintenance, animal handling, animal vaccinations, pen cleaning and other seasonal activities.
  • Report of daily livestock related activities including but not limited to animal health, weather conditions, facility conditions, forage and feed consumption.
  • Ensure safety and security of all assets including team members, equipment, forage, feed and animal inventories.
  • Make good, independent decisions based on experience and judgements.
  • Work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
  • Work hours may vary with possible evening, weekend, or holiday work required depending on the season and associated work duties.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Have knowledge or willingness to learn natural livestock husbandry techniques.
  • A minimum of two years’ experience working in a livestock ranch environment.
  • Strong desire to be part of a dynamic, entrepreneurial work environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work well independently, as a member of a high functioning team and developing effective working relationships with people from a variety of backgrounds.
  • Ability to work well under pressure.
  • Ability to lift 50+ pounds.
  • Energetic, dynamic and engaging personality.
  • Must have valid driver’s license and experience operating various types of equipment and machinery (trucks, tractors, ATV/UTVs, mowers, generators, pumps, etc.). CDL a plus.
  • Must have general equipment maintenance and repair experience. Welding experience a plus.
  • The Ranch Hand is a full-time, year-round, exempt position. Starting salary is commensurate with experience.
  • Position based on ranching operation near Babb, MT.

Invitation to Bid,

The Oglala Sioux Parks & Recreation Authority invites bids from bison producers to purchase excess mixed yearling bison. Winning bidder must have a truck and trailer ready to pick up bison upon completion of our round up. Once bison go through our chute and are weighed, they are the winning bidder’s responsibility, OSPRA staff will assist in loading bison. If winning bidder cannot pick up bison upon completion of our roundup, arrangements must be made with OSPRA and yard fees will be assessed. Also, OSPRA will not be responsible for any injuries or death of bison while they are in the pens. If the winning bidder is from out of state, OSPRA will bring in a vet and the winning bidder will be responsible for all costs to transport out of state, i.e., health certificates, bangs tags etc.

Sealed Bids will be accepted till 4:30pm on Thursday, January 25 2018.

All testing and compliance with State and Federal transportation laws are the responsibility of the buyer. No testing facilities on site.

All bison will be sold by the head. Buyers may bid on any number of bison. All bison will be sorted; gate cut if purchased in less than full lots.

The Nature Conservancy will make every effort to insure all lots are filled according to the bid sheet. However, the actual number of animals may vary slightly.

Bids must be received by Friday January 26. 2018.

Load out of lot 1, 2, and 5 will be scheduled with the successful bidder February 19-23, 2018.

Load out of lot 3 and 4 will be scheduled with the successful bidder January 29-February 2, 2018.|

Weather or logistic delayed load outs will be scheduled ASAP.

All ownership and responsibility for the bison transfer to the successful buyer once safely loaded on the buyer’s transportation.

Buyers may view the bison prior to bidding by scheduled appointment with the ranch.

Payment in full to be made to The Nature Conservancy upon loadout.
